Big changes are on the horizon for the Chugach NF Avalanche Center.
Up to two new avalanche specialists are being hired to assist with avalanche forecasting and outreach for the Kenai Peninsula as well as one avalanche specialist/professional observer to be hired for the Anchorage Front Range (Chugach State Park). Exciting news!
The Seward Ranger District has pushed hard to have two new forecasters added to the Chugach NF Avalanche Center staff. The goal is to better cover high use backcountry areas such as Summit Lake, Carter Lake, Lost Lake and Sung Harbor. In addition, providing avalanche outreach events (evening lectures and trailhead beacon clinics) is a priority for the communities of Seward, Soldatna, and others. Official outreach notice is HERE.
The Friends of the Chugach Avalanche Center will be funding a position through an agreement with Chugach State Park. The goal for this position is to provide field reports (observations) and a ‘weekend avalanche outlook’ for high use areas such as those accessed from Glen Alps, South Fork of Eagle River, and more.
