Observation: Turnagain, Girdwood

Location: Turnagain and Portage Road Obs

Route & General Observations

Visibility was limited into the Alpine and worsened as we drove South. In Turnagain Pass we could see a few new small wet loose avalanches in some of the steep channeled gully’s on Seattle Ridge. Talked to a group of skiers at Tincan who said there was a┬árecent cornice fall from CFR. In Portage we could see recent avalanche debris near Byron Glacier near the trail.

Observer Comments

Small wet loose at Turnagain, cornice failure, and piles of fresh wet debris near Byron in Portage as well as other steep channeled terrain. Otherwise visibility was too poor to know if there was more activity from the last four days.

Obscured skies, scattered rain showers, winds were ~20mph in Portage. Temps were in the 40F's.

Talked to a group who said "hot pow" and the top 2" were wet from treeline down.


The snow is melting quickly on the Southern end of Turnagain Pass (South of Center Ridge.) On the Northern end of Turnagain Pass the there is still good coverage at the road level.
