Observation: Turnagain

Location: Tincan ridge, "The Library"

Route & General Observations

We found few examples of recent avalanche activity in good visibility across
Turnagain Pass.

Mostly sunny with high cirrus. Pleasant temperatures, 23-29 degrees. Light wind
at 3800 feet, 3-6mph.

Red Flags
Evidence of recent windloading, scoured ridges, large cornices.

Wind slab, natural avalanche in picture below, probably 1-3 days old.

We skied south aspect from 3700 feet. The snow carved well with occasionally
stiffer pockets. Steeper terrain or isolated pockets are likely wind loaded in
ways that could break in a slab from a person’s influence.

Very small surface hoar, less than .5mm, was seen at 2500-3000 feet. This would
not have been noticeable except the sunlight was glinting off the square faces.
