This snowpit was at 2000 feet elevation on a west aspect of
Tincan. 6-8 inches of new light density snow fell overnight.
Underneath the fluff was all sorts of ugliness….5 different
rain crusts, facets, surface hoar. I got easy failures below
the most recent crust (15cm deep) and moderate failures
underneath another crust 30cm deep.
In another snowpit 10 feet away, Jon found 2 different layers of
buried surface hoar. One layer was on top of our most recent
crust 15cm deep and the other layer was 70cm deep from mid-
December. The 70cm layer did not fail in any of his compression
tests, but sheared cleanly when he “burped” the column.
