Followed uptrack from DOT wx station P.L. on N. side highway to turnaround point at 1950ft
No obvious signs of instability observed
mostly sunny with calm winds. At 1300 surface temp -7C.
Snow surface consisted on 2cm coarse surface hoar overlying loose snow at lower elevations and in areas. protected by vegetation. underlying Loose snow transtioned to 1F windpacked rounds above treeline. At pit site Boot penetration = 12cm. Above 1900 ft wind affect more prevalent and boot penetration decreases.
The surface hoar on top of the frim rounds layer made for pleasant skiing.
See attached pit profile. Pit done on 25 deg SE facing slope. Surface hoar overlain wind compacted rounds which overlay a 27 cm layer of knife hard M/F crust. Note: Underlying the M/F crust was 23cm 4F of coarse slushy snow. The overlying crust may be providing a possible cap which holds heat in and keeps this lower layer from freezing?? CT25@0cmQ3, ECTX.
