Location: Sunburst
Standard Sunburst uptrack, skied the front (west) side.
Obvious signs of instability
Observer Comments
There was a recent avalanche in one of the north chute of Magnum, furthest to the west. The crown was maybe 2' x 100'? Debris ran to the creek.
Weather
Squally. There was little wind until about 1:00PM when it began blowing S, 15-20. Lots of snow was being transported. The skin track was filling in between parties.
Snow surface
6"-8" of soft snow on increasingly firmer snow. Wind slabs forming in the afternoon.
Snowpack
We dug a pit on the south face of Sunburst, just below the knoll where you stop to ski the front (west) side, at an elevation of
~3000'.
Slope angle was 21 degrees.
Height of snow - 155cm.
12/23 BSH was clearly visible at 45cm, as a ~5mm layer.
Snow was right side up for the first 65cm, but transitioned to sugary, faceted snow blow that.
