Avalanche: Chugach State Park

Location: Peak 3

Route & General Observations

Parked at Rabbit Creek Trailhead and headed up the main Peak 3 gulley. It was gorgeous blue skies and in the mid 20’s. There was a fresh layer of 4-6″ of low density snow on top of an edgeable crust. There were 2 existing tracks on lookers left, off of Peak 3. Once I reached the ridge line there was a bit of wind (it had filled in the previous tracks), and a couple of large wind lips were present. I chose a line to lookers right of the previous lines, and wished I’d paid more attention to the active wind loading, as 2 turns in, a slab let loose and took for a ride. This was an excellent reminder that even on Peak 3 slides happen and even if other people have skied a close by line, slides can still happen.

Avalanche Details

A wind loaded slab broke 5-10' above me and when I tried to ski out of the avalanche to skiers left, my tips got covered and I couldn't get them back above the slide, and it took me for a 40-60' ride.

Rescue events

Self rescue. Skis got "buried" but, I was able to stay on top with some good swimming.
