Observation: Summit
Location: Manitoba
Standard uptrack. Lots of grass once off the atv trail and headed up to the first bump “minitoba(?)”.
Obvious signs of instability
Observer Comments
Whumphing reported near the top of the main face by another group. We did not hear any whumphing.
Weather
1'+ of nice powder on top of 2-3" of crust on top. Snowing most of the day but not very hard.
Snow surface
Pretty thin coverage all over, but the gully in the middle of the main face had nice snow. About a foot of powder on top of a solid crust. Deeper in some spots.
Snowpack
Dug a pit near the top of the main face in the gully where it was wind filled. 2-3" of facets (some very large, 3-4mm) facets shrunk and turned to a harder crust. 15" of powder where we dug the pit. Quick column test failed at 2 taps from the top. The failure was a pretty subtle slump with little energy behind it. Slope was 28* at the pit.

Facets at the surface, 3mm squares on the largest grid
