Avalanche: Turnagain
Location: Lynx Drainage
A look at the shallower snowpack in the South end of Turnagian Pass. Recent glide avalanche and one 1-2 day old snowmachine triggered slab.
Avalanche Details
Recent glide avalanche - photos below - in lower Lynx drainage on slopes across from trail. Looked to have released sometime 1/1-1/2.
Also, reported one snowmachiner triggered slab (estimated at 12-14" thick, 100' wide and running 300'). Rough estimate- elevation 3,000' and Southeasterly facing. This was likely triggered on 1/2 or 1/3 in the upper portion of Lynx creek. No photos.
Observer Comments
No obvious signs of instability from our ride up Lynx today. We dug two pits, no results. We did not get above 3,000'. The snowmachine triggered slide was concerning and how fresh it is is also a question. Our main concerns were steep slopes with wind loading from 12/30 wind event.
Weather
High thin clouds, temps in the mid 20'sF at 3,000' and -3F in the parking lot. Winds light and variable.
Snow surface
3-4" of loose settled snow from 12/29.
Snowpack
Below 2-2,500' the snowpack is 3-4' thick and bottomless. Above this winds have stiffened the top foot making for stiff snow over weak snow (punchy conditions - see pit photo). Higher elevations, with old wind effect, are variable (scoured, to soft snow to hard wind slab).
