Observation: Summit

Location: Japan Trees

Route & General Observations

Went for a lap up the trees and was surprised to find a very thin ice crust on top of the new snow. This crust did not exist at 500 ft in Moose Pass, and I encountered the crust to where I transitioned at 2300ft. I dug two hand pits and found a 2-3 inch melt freeze crust about 5 inches down in one and that crust did not exist in the second. The new thin ice crust on the surface came off the hand pit very easily. The crust did not impact how the new snow skied on a snowboard, but I’m sure skiers may have a different opinion.
