Avalanche: Chugach State Park

Location: Falls creek climbers left side

Route & General Observations

Very windy
A few very small slabs on cross loaded gullies near alder line
Nothing up higher
Perhaps new wind slabs are running on buried surface hoar from the recent cold windless period
Good propagation
Triggered a bigger one on the way out
We’d avoided the area where we triggered it on heading in but got lazy/complacent on the way out

Propagated up the gully wall well above me 2-10” deep.
I was able to ski off it pretty easily.
We climbed back up up and skied down the other side of the falls creek drainage where we’d climbed up. 2 other small slabs on gully walls (one in rainbow valley) also below alder line.
So much wind in this location!

Events of the day

We gave up on skiing couloirs and were sticking to lower angled slopes in falls creek and rainbow valley given the raging wind but got too close to this steep gully walk trying to exit falls on the skiers right side of the drainage. We climbed back up a bit and skied out skiers left side of the falls creek drainage (the way we’d come in) without incident .
