Recent avalanches seen in Girdwood this morning on Penguin Ridge, South aspect. Was informed of another Natural on Raggedtop seen later in the day. There was also several human triggered avalanches reported on Notch mountain in Girdwood.
Overcast
Above freezing temps during the day
Ridge top winds were 10-20mph in the afternoon
Light snow started around 2pm. Light rain observed below 600' on drive down from Pass at 5:30pm
Below 1200' - 1-2" breakable m/f crust in the morning , all aspects that later became moist
Above 1200' - 10" loose dry settled powder on West and North aspects. Didn't get onto any Southerly aspects, but suspect a sun crust on solar aspects in upper elevations.
Pit 1 - 2200', North aspect, 35* slope, HS=255. Pit height=165cm. Pit location was in a wind loaded location and the snowpack was pretty bomber and right side up in this spot. The January m/f crust was 150cm (5') below the surface and did not have facets in this location. CTN, CT22 down 35cm on density change. (Video below reported 6' slab in this location, but it was actually 5'.
Pit 2- 2300', North aspect, 25* slope, HS=125cm, Pit height=90cm. We dug along ridge in a windward area that was thinner to see if facet/crust was in this location. We found a 2.5' slab sitting on 2mm Fist hard facets on the mid January m/f crust. CT17, ECT21, PST40/100 End 75cm below the surface on facet/crust. We also had an ECTX.
