CNFAIC is a community supported avalanche center. As a Friend of the CNFAIC, you directly support the forecast and weather data you use on every backcountry adventure in Southcentral Alaska.

Friends of the CNFAIC is the official 501(c)(3) nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service. We work to:

  • Bridge the gap between limited federal funding and the actual expenses of operating the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Info Center (CNFAIC). Friends covers the salaries of two professional avalanche forecasters, plus all of the team’s equipment and safety gear.
  • Maintain our website (aka. where the public has FREE access to:
    • daily avalanche hazard advisories for the Turnagain Pass area throughout the winter ;
    • year-round data from our network of remote weather stations and webcams in all our favorite backcountry playgrounds from (**add links) Hatcher Pass to Arctic Valley, Glen Alps, Turnagain Pass, and our NEW site at Lost Lake near Seward ; and
    • our community observations platform where you can submit photos and info to inform the forecasters of avalanche incidents and snow conditions.
  • Educate our snow sports community about avalanche awareness to empower everyone to explore and enjoy the backcountry more safely. See our events calendar! (**link)
  • Award 5-7 scholarships every year for beginner to advanced avalanche training courses. Applications are due December 1.  (**link)

Are you interested in serving on Friends’ Board of Directors?

If you would like to support the CNFAIC, promote safe use of our awesome local backcountry, and have fun working together with Friends, please consider joining us! We are always interested in meeting with potential volunteers who bring:

  • Passion for avalanche safety and education ;
  • Enthusiasm to serve as an ambassador for avalanche safety in our community ;
  • Experience serving on a nonprofit board of directors or working with a nonprofit organization ;
  • Skills in fundraising, partnerships, event planning, communication tools, and financial management.
